Kallam Brahmans supporting Nanneella Estate Primary School
Kallam Brahmans are proud to support Nanneella Estate Primary School, in their Green Energy endeavours. Students from Year 3 - 6, and staff participated in the RACV Maryborough Energy Breakthrough in late November 2007, with their pushcart Nanneella's Green Speed Machine. They were ably backed up by parents and members of the local Nanneella Community.
Students had to design a Push Cart to meet certain specifications using as many recycled materials as possible, we were proud to assist the students in their early design endeavours with welding the push cart together and making design suggestions. We also provided cash sponsorship and some of the recycled steel parts used in the push cart.
Whilst competing at Maryborough the students were excellent ambassadors of their school, they gave a presentation on the design and construction, raced around an obstacle course, did sprints and had an endurance race. The students performed well and ended up coming third for Display and Presentation and first for Design and Construction. Well done! The other main sponsor for the Green Speed Machine Energy Breakthrough Challenge were Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR).
Kallam Brahmans at Elmore Field Days October 2007
Kallam Brahmans thank Lely Australia for the opportunity to display their Brahman F1 calves. The calves were part of the Lely Calm Automatic calf feeder live display.
We had the opportunity to meet with many wonderful people, some old but many new faces, we would like to invite you all to visit us at any time to view our Brahmans and discuss our breeding program.
The Brahman F1's on the display had only been introduced to the machine the night before the field days began and by the end of Thursday they knew exactly where lunch was. The way these calves easily adapted to their new environment is testament to their quiet nature and adaptability. They have now settled in back at home without any fuss and are wondering where all the people have gone.
Neil was again very resourceful and was seen handing out stickers promoting our website and the services we at Kallam Brahmans offer. If you require something extra special we will strive to provide it. He did come up and ask during one day, "how old are the bulls that we have left for sale, that man over there wants to know". Then later that day on the way home, "what price do our females start at?". Not bad for an eleven year old, well done Neil you did a great job.
Thanks again to Clive, Jurgen and Kevin and team for the opportunity to be a part of your site and congratulations on winning the best field days exhibit for the second year in a row. We look forward to working with you again next year.
Brahman F1's Excel
One of our customers recently reported to us that when he sold his Brahman F1 Vealer steer who was 2 months younger than his traditional Euro bred vealer steers he made approx 25 cents/kg live weight more than his contemporaries. Hence we have a very satisfied customer who wishes that he had more Brahman F1's lifting his bottom line. He was able to turn his vealer off at 5 months instead of the normal seven months for more money and less costs. Investing in Brahman Genetics makes sound business sense.
Others who have used our genetics have similar stories, extremely feed efficient, excellent temperament, early maturing, good to better than expected market returns.
We have been selling a percentage of our Brahman F1's every year, they have gone for a variety of things, bulls to mop up dairy herds as they still work in the heat, steers and females for camp drafting, and females for vealer mothers.
Neil at Rockhampton Junior Beef 2007
Neil attended Rockhampton Junior Beef Show again in June 2007, the heifer he showed was Palmvale Miss Pablo Winchester 2266 and full sister to his own heifer who didn't want to lead. He earned a fifth place in the heifer 9 months and under 12 months with an encouragement award. In the Junior Parading he received an encouragement award. When asked if he enjoyed Junior Beef he replied "last year I didn't get anything, this year I've got a ribbon and a hat and a brush". The children were also educated on the points of stud and trade cattle judging. It was very pleasing to see young new Victorian Brahman Breeders Megan Worth winning the stud cattle judging for the 10 years and under 12 years and Danny Worth coming fifth in the trade cattle judging in the same age group. Well done Megan and Danny we hope to see you guys do well and good luck with your new Brahman stud Worthwhile.
Special thanks to Kearin and Beth Streeter for preparing Miss Pablo for Neil and organising to have her at Junior Beef. Thanks Tim Olive for transporting her and looking after her until Neil arrived. Also thanks to Ken and Wendy Cole for preparing our Petty John heifer enabling her to be exhibited at Junior Beef and Brian Wright for looking after her. Special thanks to Tom Chevalley and those that gave Neil tips and assisted in making this a worthwhile experience for him.
Kallam Brahmans Export Brahman Embryos to New Zealand
In April 2007 Kallam Brahmans successfully exported 6 embryos to New Zealand from their donor cow Jomanda Miss Merlene 173. The embryos were sired by Mr 3X He's Got the Look (Imp US). The Embryos have gone to Northland with more to go shortly.
Full brothers to Miss Merlene 173 have sold at Rockhampton Brahman Week Annual Sale for prices in excess of $20,000, a Mr 3X He's Got the Look bull out of Miss Merlene's full sister made $36,000. A Merlene female sold in 2006 at the Grafton Bos Indicus Sale for $13,000, this is a sought after very fertile cow family, with females getting in calf every year.
In a tough drought year such as we have just experienced it has been good to be able to diversify away from our traditional dairying business.
